A beautiful gite is set within a small holding which is full of rustic charm, enjoying unspoilt views of sunflower fields and rolling hills for that real getaway. Full of character, Chez Devallon is an old french dairy farm which the ownerns now run as a (nearly) organic smallholding, striving at self-sufficiency in this peaceful setting in the heart of the wonderful Dordogne region of France.
Chez Devalon is packed with history and character, enjoy a holiday here and you simply won’t want to go home. The owners have lovingly restored this old dairy farm, the open-plan layout of the gite brings a real sense of light and space with a calming and relaxing feel. Traditional light oak beams can be enjoyed throughout the property, with feature fireplaces and oak floors, this really is just what you would expect from a sweet French holiday home.
There are two spacious bedrooms; one double room and a mezzanine which hosts twin beds with space for another cot or bed if needed. The rustic charm continues downstairs with gorgeous stonework and feature bookcases made within the walls of the building. The open plan lounge and kitchen area offer a fantastic space for a memorable family meal made with local delicacies.
Outside there is plenty of space for children to enjoy, as well as a large swimming pool, perfect to cool off or just simply relax by with a good book. Stroll around the courtyard and enjoy the peaceful garden or doze in one of the hammocks under the shade of the lime tree. The trampoline, play area and table tennis will keep children entertained.
The owners have a small flock of sheep (come in the spring to see the lambs), chickens & sometimes have a couple of pigs! They cut & bale hay and grow very small crops of corn & sunflowers for animal feed. With a gorgeous orchard, a rather too large organic veggie patch and a nearby willow plantation the spirit of a working farm is very much alive here.
There are plenty of places to visit locally, Aubeterre is just 20 minutes away, merited with “un des plus beaux villages de France” offers something for everyone, quirky shops, several restaurants on the village square, an incredible monolithic church, a sandy river beach and great canoeing. Or Lake Jemaye just 40 minutes away has a beach with bars and restaurants overlooking the waterfront and is a great safe place for children to paddle. Try canoeing along the river from Brantome, the little Venice of the Dordogne, to Bordeilles with its fortified chateaux, or explore the quiet but well signed lanes by bike or on foot. Why not hire the tandem and explore, or enquire about a willow weaving course.
Whatever you chose to do, a wonderful holiday experience is waiting for you.
We have plenty of great reviews, but here is a small selection:
"Just got back from staying at Chez Devallon. What a stunning place to stay. The gite was as described and more. Very peaceful with spectacular views, only regret was that it wasn't later in the year when the fields of sunflowers would be in bloom. Wendy and Matt really friendly, hardworking couple with charming children. Would recommend for all, plenty to do in the area & plenty of places to eat close by."
"A lovely, well equipped gite, beautiful away from it all location. This is our second visit and the kids are already asking when they can go back again! Wendy, Matt & the family once again made us feel extremely welcome, they always went that extra mile to sort things out for us."
"This has to be one of the best locations we have stayed in France, we needed the break and we certainly got that and a whole lot more. The guys who own this fab place are a real asset of the holiday. September time is also a great time to go - treat yourself to the overnight ferry from Portsmouth - a great start to the holiday. "
